How to buy a ticket in advance to visit the Alhambra?

buy Alhambra tickets in advance

One piece of advice we give to most travelers is to book tickets in advance. The Alhambra has many visitors per day, and taking into consideration the restricted number of visitors, advance booking is anybody’s safest bet.

Tickets are generally sold out on a daily basis, so a good approach we recommend is buying an advance ticket some days before the official visit day, and even weeks or months ahead of your planned date. You could check out the official Alhambra website.

Most days of the year, the Alhambra tickets are sold out on the official website. However, it is still possible to visit the Alhambra. In case you don’t find the tickets on a specific date of your choice, the best way around this would be to book a tour.

With an Alhambra tour, you have the added advantage of having a guide that will be with you throughout the whole visit. You could check out and compare various the prices of various tours on TourScanner. Usually, by adding €10 – €15 on top of the normal entrance ticket price, you can get a 3-hour guided tour, with the benefit of getting a last-minute ticket.

Hot tip: Don’t miss our complete guide about the best Alhambra tours.

Another possibility is buying the Alhambra Card, which includes the entrance to the Alhambra, even if it is sold out on the official website, plus several other attractions. This option is described below.

If you do not want to purchase either a tour or the Alhambra Card, the only option is to visit the open parts of the Alhambra, which are completely free. You can enjoy a nice view of the city as well. You can learn more about this option below.

Is it possible to visit the Alhambra for free?

visit the Alhambra for free

It is possible to visit sections of the Alhambra for free on certain dates. Access to the complex is free for children under the age of 12 years.

For everyone else, you have to wait until November 16 to visit the Alhambra without the entrance charges. November 16 is the International Day of World Heritage where the board of the museum has a free cultural and educational day in the Andalusian Monuments as well as in the Monumental Complex of the Alhambra. Though, in order to get access to the museum on this day, you will have to receive an invitation.

How to get Alhambra tickets last minute when sold out on the official website? What to do?

how to get Alhambra last minute tickets

Do you want to know the best way to get your Alhambra tickets last minute when they are sold out on the official website? Don’t worry, there are other ways to visit the Alhambra.

If by chance you only have a specific date to visit the Alhambra and all the tickets are sold out on the official website and you need last-minute entrance to the Alhambra, there are 3 options:

Buy the Alhambra Card: The Alhambra Card always includes a ticket to enter the Alhambra. When you buy the card, you will need to select the day of the visit to the Alhambra and you will be sure that it will be valid to enter on that day. The price is usually €49.

Book a guided tour: Starting from €25, there is always an Alhambra ticket included even if the tickets are sold out in the official website.

There are many companies offering tours and you can easily compare all of them by visiting TourScanner. With a guided visit, there will be a local guide to explain everything to you about the history of the Alhambra.

The duration of the visit is usually 3 hours.

Stay awake the night before or wake up very early: Every night, the official ticket system is refreshed and updated. Some tickets become available for the day after and they are added on sale on the official website.

The Alhambra official website has confirmed to us that this process happens every night. But, there is not a pre-defined number of “new” tickets added on sale every night. And, the exact time at which the system is refreshed and the new tickets are released is not known, and it can vary every day.

Therefore, this is not an easy and guaranteed way to buy a ticket. If you want to try it or if there are no other options available, it’s an alternative that exists. Instead, we do suggest booking a tour or the Alhambra Card to be sure to be able to visit the palace.

Until some years ago, the same procedure was happening offline. Every morning, there were some tickets available for the same day. They were sold to the first people in line in the morning at the opening of the entrance. But it’s not the case anymore. This is the reason why on many blogs and websites, you will still read about the possibility of waking up early and going to the entrance to be the first in line.

Bonus option: If you cannot afford a tour, you can visit a small part of the palace for free. It is only a limited part of the fortress, in which you can enjoy a view of the city, but you will not be able to enter the complex. At the end of this article, you will find more info about it.

How to buy Alhambra tickets on the day?

how to buy Alhambra tickets on the same day

If you are looking for Alhambra tickets on the same day of your visit, you can check the official website to see if there are any tickets still available.

You can also go to the Alhambra itself and use the ticket vending machines at the ticket office pavilion, Corral del Carbón, Bañuelo or Dal al Horra. The ticket offices do sell tickets on the day, and tickets to Nasrid Palaces up to hours before entering. These tickets are subject to availability, and we would advise this option only if you have flexibility.

You can follow one of the suggestions given to travelers looking for Alhambra last-minute tickets:

  1. Book a guided tour starting on the same day, which includes the entrance ticket. Make sure to select the date of today to see what is still available.
  2. Buy the Alhambra Card
  3. Check the official website on the night before the date of your visit or early in the morning. If you are lucky, you can get a ticket on the same day, but, as explained above, it is completely unpredictable.

What is included in the Alhambra Ticket? What will you see?

what will you see at the Alhambra

Each ticket is specifically made to cater to certain sites and scenes in the Alhambra complex monument. Depending on the tickets, there are various things that you will see at Alhambra. With a history dating back centuries, you will see some of its earliest foundations and latest modifications.

Alhambra predominantly reflects carefully preserved pieces of Islamic architecture from between the 13th and 15th centuries, towards the end of Islamic rule in the Iberian Peninsula. The most notable buildings and palaces were built during the Nasrid dynasty, who were also the last Islamic rulers before Catholic Monarchs took back power during the Reconquista.

While this marked the end of Al-Andalus, the legacy of Muslim rule lives on in the stunning architecture and art seen today on a visit to Alhambra. See below some of the notable sections of Alhambra you will see through your ticket.

Alcazaba

Alcazaba, Alhambra

The Alcazaba is among the oldest sections of the Alhambra, and also marks the highest point of the hill, giving you a great view overlooking the city.

The Alcazaba was a fortress and military complex designed to protect the city from invasion. It served as the residence of soldiers and their families, and you can today stroll among its old walls for a glimpse into the past.

Nasrid Palaces

Nasrid Palaces, Alhambra

The Nasrid Palaces are among some of the most beautiful constructions in Alhambra, built by the Nasrid dynasty.

With your ticket, you’ll be able to visit the Mexuar where ministers would meet, and the Lindaraja corridor which features idyllic gardens. Admire the Comares Palaces and its grand courtyard, which served as a defining feature of family life in this era.

One of the most famous sections of the Nasrid Palaces is the Court of Lions, located in the Palace of Lions. Featuring a central fountain supported by 12 sculpted marble lions, the courtyard has been lauded for its architectural precision and finesse.

Keep an eye out on the ceilings for exceptional examples of muqarnas, a type of vaulted ceiling in Islamic architecture known for its ornamental detail.

Generalife

Generalife, Alhambra

The Palace of Generalife served as the retreat for Nasrid sultans, and the gardens were also a site of agriculture. Filled with water features, orchards and fascinating feats of engineering that brought water to Alhambra, Generalife is a blissful site in the monument complex.

Here, you can take your time to walk among the gardens, admiring the cypress trees, fountains and courts that make up Generalife. Many of the gardens at Generalife seen today are the designs of landscapers from centuries after the Nasrid dynasty lived here, and reflect the change of taste and style over time.

Partal

Partal, Alhambra

The Partal is a garden section of Alhambra, overlooked by the Partal Palace, the oldest palatial structure in the monumental complex. Featuring a portico overlooking a pool of water, the Partal section of Alhambra offers a glimpse into the life of the sultans.

Here, you can also visit the oratory or prayer room which was used by the sultans, the houses built around the Partal as well as the Tower of the Ladies, which provides views across Generalife and Albaicin and features stunning engravings from its top.

Palace of Charles V

Palace of Charles V, Alhambra

After the fall of the Nasrid Dynasty in the 15th century, bringing an end to Islamic rule on the Iberian Peninsula, the Alhambra underwent some modifications. With the successful Reconquista and implementation of Christian rule, the Catholic Monarchs and Charles V, in particular, oversaw architectural changes.

In the 16th century, Charles V built his eponymous complex on the monument grounds in the style of the Renaissance, contrasting with the Moorish architecture.

The Palace of Charles V was never completed as a palace, but today houses the Alhambra Museum which exhibits many artistic and architectural features that have been excavated from Alhambra itself.

Also located here is the Museo de Bellas Artes de Granada, a fine art museum that exhibits the work of renowned artists from Granada, artistic pieces that depict Granda, and notable contemporary art.

Andalusian Monuments

Andalusian Monuments, Granada

The Alhambra is not the only notable monument in Granda. Numerous other architectural attractions are located in the neighborhood of Albaicin, the oldest quarter of Granada.

These buildings are collectively known as the Andalusian Monuments. Among them is the Baño del Nogal, known simply as Bañuelo, a well-preserved traditional Arab bath dating back to either the 11th or 12th century.

You can also visit the Corral del Carbón, once a bustling marketplace for merchants selling wheat. Stop by the Golden Furnace House and Dar al-Horra Palace to see further examples of Moorish architecture.

Can you cancel or modify your Alhambra tickets?

cancel or modify your Alhambra tickets

Once you purchase the ticket from the official website, the tickets cannot be canceled, modified or returned, so we highly recommend that you are certain of the dates when purchasing the tickets.

If you are buying from reseller websites, some websites offer the cancelation or modification option at a fee, so we would recommend checking the terms and conditions of the website before purchasing any of the tickets.

Avoid the crowd – What is the best time to visit the Alhambra?

best time to visit the Alhambra

We recommend that the best way to avoid crowds at the Alhambra is opting to visit in the early morning or nights. These two timeframes have fewer people and less congestion, which makes it easy to move around the Alhambra. It will also be less busy on a weekday than on the weekend!

You can also opt to purchase a ticket that will give you access to parts of the Alhambra during the day and other sections at night, giving you a stunning view of the monument at different times of the day. A night visit is sure to be magical, especially if you combine it with a flamenco show!

NB: The Alhambra is closed on the 25th of December and on the 1st of January.

What if I don’t get any kind of ticket or tour for the Alhambra? May I still visit something?

Gate of Justice, Alhambra

If you run out of luck and don’t get any tickets, there are still some breathtaking sights that you might still experience from the Alhambra.

There are some free zones where all this can happen. Taking into consideration that the Alhambra by itself is a city, you can easily cross the wall gates with no restriction and you can have a view of the Gate of Justice.

Once you are in, you can enter the Palace of Charles V for free. Inside is the Alhambra Museum which can also be visited for free, and features many stunning examples of Islamic Art. On the front terrace of the palace is the Gate of Wine where you can comfortably have a selfie or picture with Albaicín in the background.

At the Alhambra, it is also possible to visit Baño de la Mezquita, or the Mosque Bath, a historical and essential part of the complex, for free.

It’s also valuable to note that the Andalusian Monuments are free to visit on Sunday. This gives you the opportunity to still see many important pieces of Islamic architecture outside of Alhambra.

We also advise people to take a stroll through the Calle Real where they get to go through the citadel and end up at a really nice hotel that was initially an old monastery.

Although you get a whole bunch of great places and sites to visit for free, you should really try and get a ticket and experience the monumental Alhambra!
